Imagine school without summer vacations?

Published by tuna at 5:25 pm under School

I read an interesting article on the history of the School Summer Vacation. Many, Many years ago, before the Civil War, schools used one of two calendars. The rural schools had Summer and Winter terms so that the children could help with planting and harvesting in the Fall and Spring. The urban schools had as many as 48 weeks of school with one break per quarter.

In the 1840’s that all changed when it was considered that rural schooling was insufficient and urban schooling was too much. The concern about the long school year was overstimulating young minds that could lead to nervous disorders or insanity.
